
What is a Drip Groove
A drip groove is one of the most important features on concrete window sills, copings, and other exposed architectural concrete products. Although small, it plays a major role in protecting buildings from water damage and staining.
Why have a Drip Groove?
A drip groove is a recessed channel formed underneath the concrete product near the outer edge.
Its purpose is to stop rainwater from running back underneath the concrete and onto the wall surface.
Without a drip groove, water can:
- Run down face brick or plaster walls
- Cause staining and dampness
- Create algae or mould growth
- Damage paint and finishes over time
The drip forces the water to fall clear of the wall surface instead of tracking back underneath the concrete product.
Our Standard Drip Detail
Modcon Window Sills
Our concrete window sills are manufactured with:
- A 10 mm round drip groove
- Positioned approximately 25 mm to the centre from the leading outside edge
- Installed on the underside of the sill
This allows water to drip away from the wall correctly.
Modcon Copings
Our concrete copings are manufactured with:
- A 10 mm round drip groove
- Positioned approximately 25 mm to the centre from the outside edges
- Installed on both sides of the coping
This ensures proper water runoff on both faces of the wall.
Why Proper Water Management Matters
Concrete products exposed to weather must be designed to manage water correctly.
Proper drip detailing helps:
- Extend the lifespan of walls and finishes
- Reduce water staining
- Prevent moisture penetration
- Improve long-term appearance
- Reduce maintenance costs
